Come join the Wharton Club of SoCal in commemorating Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday by taking a hike up to his Obelisk at the Kenneth Hahn Recreation Area in Baldwin Hills!!! We’ll place a memorial wreath at the Obelisk, at his place in the park that celebrates his commitment to peace, justice, equality, and nonviolence.
Kenneth Hahn Recreation Area (www.parks.lacounty.gov) is a natural treasure in Los Angeles County. We’ll take the hike up Diane’s Trail to the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial obelisk. For those more adventurous, there’s a longer hike: the Community Loop (2.25 miles). For those who just want to see the iconic view of downtown LA, from which many scenic photos are taken, drive up and meet us at the obelisk around 11 am. After a few minutes of spoken tribute, we’ll decamp to a local community spot for lunch.
Parking at Kenneth Hahn Recreation Area is $7 cash per car on weekends & holidays, so please be prepared, or avoid the parking issue altogether by taking The Link, the Baldwin Hills Parklands Shuttle/Microbus (www.LAGoBus.info). You can pick up The Link at the either the LaCienega-Jefferson Metro bus adjacent to Expo Station or at the intersection of LaCienega & Rodeo or at Stoneview Nature Center (5950 Stoneview Drive). The Microbus loops around every half hour. Let the driver know you want to get off at the Visitor Center, which is the exit for the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area.

10:00am: Meetup at the lake & confirm participants: look for red & blue signs (Everybody gets a buddy!)

10:30am: Begin the hike up to the Obelisk (15 - 30 minutes)

11:00am: Set up the tribute wreath and offer spoken words or other tribute and take photos for later upload to Wharton SoCal website
