The Price We Pay:
Accountability, Risks, and Opportunities in the Climate Transition

Thursday, February 13th, 9:00–10:00 am PDT on Zoom

Join Wharton Professor Witold Henisz and Alex Diamond from Carbon Mapper for a cutting edge outlook on accountability in mitigating climate change, risks to businesses related to climate, and opportunities in the transition to sustainable systems.

Global losses attributed to climate change annually have reached over $1T, and everyone is vulnerable. However, with greenhouse gas emissions concentrated in a handful of sectors, there is opportunity to apply new data and technologies to account for and address them. Prof. Henisz will present an overview of who is footing climate-related losses, how businesses are at risk, and opportunities to lead and profit in the climate transition. Alex Diamond will show how new satellite-based data products that visualize greenhouse gas emission plumes are providing a huge leap forward in accuracy for accountability and mitigation.

Witold J. Henisz is the Vice Dean and Faculty Director of the ESG Initiative and Deloitte & Touche Professor of Management in Honor of Russell E. Palmer at Wharton. His research examines the impact of political hazards as well as environmental, social and governance factors more broadly on the strategy and valuation of global corporations. This work analyzes best practices in corporate diplomacy to win the hearts and minds of external stakeholders as well as the measurement and valuation thereof. His most recent work focuses on the application of alternative data to the measurement of non-traditional political and ESG risks and opportunities and their financial impact on multinational firms and asset managers.

Alex Diamond is the Director of Products and Engineering at Carbon Mapper, which uses remote sensing technology to detect, pinpoint, and quantify methane and CO2 to improve global monitoring and enable science-based decision-making. Alex leads product vision and execution across large-scale satellite data pipelines and front-end software for GHG emissions monitoring. Previously, he held management roles at Descartes Labs and DigitalGlobe, and co-founded RS Metrics pioneering commercial information derived from satellite imagery.
