Visit to the California African-American Museum
Sat, 06/29/2024, 10 am PDT
Come join the Wharton SoCal Culture Club to celebrate Juneteenth! Although the Emancipation Proclamation announced that enslaved people in the Confederate States under rebellion against the U.S. were free as of January 1, 1863, this recently formalized Federal holiday commemorates the day that a sufficient Union troop force (2,000 Union soldiers) entered Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865, and enforced this executive decree. All Americans and freedom-loving people can celebrate this first important step toward the U.S. becoming a more perfect union.
The California African-American Museum (CAAM) has just reopened as of May 22, 2024 after a flood. Although CAAM has no specific Juneteenth exhibit, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African-American History & Culture offers a digital toolkit to explore more with educational resources for families, teachers, history lovers, and other curious people.
