Join Wharton Women and guests for an intro to Mahjong — a private class just for our group, taught by Kim Leitzes (W’04). We'll start with traditional 16-tile mahjong to build a foundation in tile names, calling, and the flow of the game, then move into a crash course on the NMJL card to cover the basics of American Mahjong. No experience necessary — come ready to learn a game that's as strategic as it is social.
Please note, the club will be doing two Mahjong events – one in Santa Monica, 10/9, and one in South Redondo Beach, 10/17. You are welcome to attend one or both events.
Event Schedule:
· 8:45 – 9am: Welcome and meet the group
· 9 – 10am: Mahjong Class (16-tile traditional + American)
· 10 – 10:45am: Open play and networking
Pricing:
· Wharton SoCal Club members: $50
· Non-members and guests: $55
Location: Courtyard Kitchen, 1211 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403
We will have several tables reserved. Coffee/tea and food can be ordered at an additional cost.
Additional Details: Sorry, no walk-ins for this event. Please bring your National Mahjong League Card if you’d like to learn to play American mahjong. No game card is required to play traditional mahjong. Beginners and all-levels welcome!
Tickets are non-refundable.
About Your Instructor:
Kim Leitzes (W’04) is a mahjong host and community builder in North County San Diego, who first learned the game as a kid playing it with her grandparents. She rediscovered mahjong while living in Shanghai and Hong Kong for nearly 15 years. A former investment banker, hedge fund analyst, and exited software entrepreneur, she brings that same strategic instinct to teaching mahjong — along with a genuine passion for bringing people together.
